About
Rajgad Fort was one of the most magnificent hill forts in Maharashtra and served as the first capital of the Maratha Empire under Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj for nearly 26 years. Perched at an elevation of about 1,395 metres in the Sahyadri mountain range, the fort was known for its impressive architecture, strong fortifications, and strategic location. It featured three prominent spurs—Padmavati Machi, Suvela Machi, and Sanjivani Machi—along with the towering Balekilla, which offered spectacular panoramic views of the surrounding valleys and neighbouring forts. Rajgad witnessed several significant events in Maratha history and played a vital role in the expansion of the empire. Today, its well-preserved ruins, ancient gateways, temples, water cisterns, and scenic trekking trails continue to attract history enthusiasts, nature lovers, and trekkers from across the country.
